After the concert, while still on stage, Alphonse whispered: “He, Joe, that trombone player is too much. Can’t you arrange for us to cut a record together?” “Yeah,” I said, “but haven’t you got an exclusive contract with Blue Note?” Alphonse: “To cut that record, I’d do anything.” … After breakfast, without knowing what Alphonse had said the night before, Albert remarked, “I really would like to have Alphonse Mouzon for my next MPS record. Do you think he would do it?” … From the way Jaco sounded I knew he wanted to do it. So I took the chance – and two days later, Jaco said, “Joe Zawinul feels I should do it, so I’ll come.”
